Artist Statement

Art as Medicine

Joseph Tapaquon, a gifted nêhiyaw (Cree) artist, hails from Regina, Saskatchewan, and proudly represents the George Gordon First Nation, embracing his Indigenous heritage deeply. At the age of thirty-seven, Joe has cultivated his artistic talents throughout his life, drawing inspiration from his familial roots and culture.

Good relation and methodology

Relation-Centric

Our team, which we fondly refer to as our herd, offers distinct consulting perspectives, which grew from our diverse lived experiences and stories across mikinak ministik (Turtle Island), colonially referred to as Canada. Composed of community members highly skilled in various fields of practice, our herd carries Indigenous and intersectional experiences, enabling us to deliver deeply insightful and culturally relative services. Most importantly, we strive to acknowledge the spiritual pathway of life and root ourselves in approaches which call for ceremony, prayer, and humility to better serve our communities, clients, and askiy — the Earth.

Collaboration & Walking together

Tatâga’s approach is guided and performed alongside community members to ensure that our work aligns with the ancestral principles of the diverse communities we work in and for. We innerstand the complexities of working in marginalized/Indigenous communities and the pain and beauty within these spaces and families. We strive to root ourselves in love and kindness while also carrying an attitude of life-long learning and a unique ability to call for and make decisive actions when necessary. This balanced approach allows us to create sustainable solutions which respect the past while realizing futures that honors all our relations. As we walk together with our clients and communities, we continually adapt our strategies to meet evolving needs, ensuring that our work is in alignment with communal needs and goals.

Independent Research

Our independent research approaches are designed to uphold the integrity of the communities we serve and the principles we abide by as consultants and community members. Our research exists outside of the realms of academic institutions and rather rests within the communities and the lived experiences of those we serve. While we may at times leverage the use of in-practice methodological approaches (quantitative and qualitative), we strive to decolonize our research to serve community in a manner which does not privatize knowledges nor barriers grassroots community members from participating in community-led solutions.

Stewardship

Our work is deeply rooted in the reclamation, nourishment, and sharing of Indigenous Ways of Being, both in our personal lives and within the broader community. We recognize that knowledge springs not only from lived experiences and ancestral stories but also from the earth below, the stars above, and all our relations within and outside. As both learners and guardians, we commit ourselves to serve as stewards and helpers, dedicated to the wellbeing of our communities and the work we undertake. With a particular emphasis on youth and cultural reclamation, we recognize the critical need to share and transfer knowledges, supporting our younger generations through prayer, advocacy, and active participation in their cultural practices and ways of life.

Intersectionality
& Relationality

Our miskanawah (pathway) to intersectionality is a continued life long journey to support all our relations, across the globe and particularly in lands suffering from ongoing extraction and violence. We share a communal belief that no one is taken care of until we all are. At Tatâga Inc., we recognize and have adopted the United Nations’ working definition of the term, “Indigenous Peoples’, which states:

“Indigenous communities, peoples and nations are those which, having a historical continuity with pre-invasion and pre-colonial societies that developed on their territories, consider themselves distinct from other sectors of the societies now prevailing on those territories, or parts of them.”

With this working definition, we can nourish a starting seed which calls for unity, harmony, and love for all our relations and communities
— across the globe. We acknowledge our own limitations of lived experiences; therefore, we partner and work with practitioners and relatives with stories and skills relative to the projects we are working on.
